A Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) is a very effective tool for communication. It is an important aspect of the agreement between the parties and outlines how to ensure health and safety at the job site. In addition, the SSSP forms to aid in building a site regarding health and safety since it guides all the obligations that must be met in workplaces, as identified in the following section.
An SSSP facilitates collaboration, improves efficiency, and makes incorporating safety into the operation easier. According to Site Safe New Zealand (2022), many large primary contractors demand that they submit an SSSP during the bidding process or, at the very least, finalize it before beginning work onsite. Life is easier for everyone when everyone is informed and ready. According to Site safe New Zealand, SSSP befits building sites in the following ways;
First, it assists in recognizing and controlling risks. The SSSP aids in understanding the site dangers. The contractor may discover possible dangers with the aid of this phase. It offers the contractor the chance to detect and avoid problems and involves a thorough inspection of the construction site. Inspecting the environs for a few minutes is frequently needed before beginning any task. SSSP will assist in looking for any electrical dangers. This guarantees that every electrical equipment is checked for faults and tested before marking. Other compounds that need to be examined include those that pose a danger of catastrophic fire or explosion mishaps. Paints, gasoline, and cleaning supplies are examples of such risks. A life-saving question to ask oneself is if there is a chance of suffering from muscular strain, harm from bad design, falling or slipping, becoming trapped between or stuck by anything, or coming into touch with something dangerous.
Second, SSSP is helpful when reporting errors and incidents. When developing the workstation, the demands of the job must be factored. Make sure the location has the necessary hardware and tools. Workers should notify a supervisor if they see anybody behaving dangerously. For instance, near-miss reporting is vital to an efficient incident recording process. One must input correct records and meet the minimum qualifying standards mentioned. Here, the tool lists the credentials, education, work history, and level of expertise of those operating the respective job site.
Fourth, SSSP aids emergency preparedness, including first aid and rescue procedures. Safety professionals also develop a health and safety strategy for the emergency operation site to minimize potential danger. The form helps create a plan to get dangers out of the workplace. However, it is also evident that mishaps may still happen. As a result, it is necessary to develop this strategy to protect the workforce's interests in an emergency. Finally, it helps by allowing employees to take part in safety measures. Other crucial functions that subcontractors play in assisting us in maintaining workplace safety. Since they recognize that the employees have a unique safety duty, site experts actively include the workers. Contrary to certain safety experts, it is evident that those who spend little time on the working site can affect the productivity of other employees (Bryson et al., 2017). They influence everyone's general safety and consequently affect business culture.
However, as an individual running a company or endeavor, the level of accountability of subcontractors primarily relies on their ability to manage the risk or danger. People expect those who have much influence over the issue to shoulder more responsibility than others who do not have that same advantage. Subcontractors must share the obligation for their safety with other workers if they are operating on the same construction site (García et al., 2021). For instance, we cannot expect Joe, a floor sander which works long hours on the job site scrubbing the floors with others, to carry the whole burden himself. He should continue talking to everyone operating at the exact location to ensure everyone's safety.
In general, sub-contractors and construction firms must: Provide the necessary facilities that improve worker occupational safety; Ensure that the job site is secure and operational; Provide amenities like access to water for worker welfare; Ensure that each individual on the site manages and controls the equipment, materials, and structures securely; Provide the necessary instruction, guidance, and data in addition to completing the SSSP based on the five responsibilities mentioned above.
Hazard Assessment
Hazard Assessment involves identifying risks, assessing the risks they provide, and controlling the risks associated with operation hazards by adding suitable hazard measures into the design process. According to Adam (2011), the goal of the hazard assessment is to assist in creating a strategy that will help identify, evaluate and manage hazards and create controls depending on particular working circumstances. In addition, both employees and employers have to alert others to possible health and safety risks.
