Working with young children
Teachers have a great responsibility of ensuring that young children understand what is taught in the classroom. Teachers are the focal point because as they determine how the learning environment works towards allowing the children exploit their full potential. In early childhood setting, teachers interact with the students all the time which gives an opportunity for the teachers to develop various strategies which make learning viable. Teachers can create an environment where children are eager to learn.
Children have different abilities which call for a teacher to explore different ways of approaching every individual child. Children can be allowed to learn in groups. When children work in small groups or pairs, they find it easy to interact with one another. It allows them to open up since kids may shy off when they are interacting with a large group. Here, the learners can co-operate in accomplishing individual goals which make learning easier and interesting. They can also review each other’s work which helps them to learn new ideas.
There are three categories the teacher can group the children using various criteria. Firstly, children with different abilities can be brought together. Here children with different abilities are brought together to allow each one to contribute in their area of interest. The teacher identifies the capacities and interests of each child and strives to ensure that each group is composed of students with diverse abilities and talents. In such a setting, one student may assist the others with writing, while another one who is good at drawing picture can represent the group during a drawing session. Secondly, the learners with similar abilities can be brought together. The teacher groups the children who have the same ability together to help them to develop together. When children with similar abilities work together, they assist one another in developing their leaning abilities. They solve problems easier since all of them participate equally in the discussions.
