Why damaged cartilages take a long time to heal
Cartilage is a tough and flexible connective tissue. The tissue is found in various body parts. The rib cage, joints between bones, and the ear of all mammals have cartilage. The cartilage tissue acts like a shock absorber. Cartilage damage is usually caused by falling badly or a sudden direct blow. Cartilage in joints is poorly vascular, i.e. it has no direct supply of blood, unlike other tissues. This implies that nutrients have to diffuse to it through synovial or perichondrium fluid, which is slow, and inefficient. This slow passage of necessary nutrients causes the slow healing rate (Cells and Tissues Introduction to Histology and Cell Biology 1983).
Injured parts obtain a limited supply of nutrients. This implies that less helper blood cells are available for the repair of damaged tissues. Additionally, cartilages bear a lot of weight and are significantly flexible. The healing rate also depends on the type of injury, where it took place and the care you got for it.
