It conceptualizes learning as a social practice where writing and reading are employed to share ideas and derive meaning from real-world situations. Psycholinguistic Theory Psycholinguistic theory argues that human language behavior is inextricably connected to psychological processes, which directly influence the acquisition of language (Zhou, 2024). It contributes to the understanding of how children learn to speak, comprehend, and utilize language. It also reflects how children learn to write and read. Sociolinguistic Theory Sociolinguistic theory asserts that ethnographic and sociological factors influence literacy achievement because literacy is driven by social and cultural factors anchored on pre-existing ideologies (Khaghaninejad, 2024). It views literacy as anchored on social practices within specific cultural environments and that a child’s interactions with others influence their language acquisition (Khaghaninejad, 2024). Emergent Literacy Theory Emergent literacy theory argues that a learner’s attitudes, skills, and knowledge develop way before they interact with conventional writing or reading (Institute of Educational Sciences, 2024). It reflects a child’s ability to comprehend and utilize a particular language effectively. Schema Theory Schema theory asserts that a text mainly offers guidelines for readers or learners about how to construct meaning on their own, via acquired knowledge (Wenying, 2022). It reflects how a child learns the language by associating new concepts and words to their extant schemata, leveraging their vocabulary as well as comprehension of the structures of language (Wenying, 2022).
