Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics v2.0 – Year 1, Space (Geometry)
Describe and draw two-dimensional shapes, with and without digital technologies; recognize and describe three-dimensional objects in the environment (VC2M1SP01).
Recognize and classify familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects using prominent features (VC2M1SP02).
Investigate the effect of one-step transformations on shapes and objects, such as flips and slides (VC2M1SP03).
Interpret simple maps of familiar locations and identify the relative positions of key features (VC2M1SP04).

Mathematical content knowledge (MCK)
Geometry at Year 1 focuses on developing foundational concepts of shape recognition, spatial reasoning, and transformation. Students begin by identifying and naming common two-dimensional (2D) shapes and three-dimensional (3D) objects, distinguishing their properties such as edges, corners, and faces. They also explore the effects of transformations, such as flips and slides, and begin to interpret simple maps and positional language.
Some key ideas that would be used include recognising that shapes can look different depending on orientation, but retain their defining attributes, and that spatial understanding supports navigation and problem-solving. Accordingly, after doing research, it was highlighted that early spatial reasoning strongly correlates with later mathematics achievement and STEM success (Mix & Cheng, 2012). Additionally, the study done by Mix and Cheng (2021) found that in Year 1, the curriculum would focus on children's support to transition from informal shape recognition to structured understanding of geometric properties (Clements & Sarama, 2011). Thus, the curriculum would focus on MCK for teachers, grasping how classification, transformations, and spatial awareness develop incrementally and underpin mathematical reasoning.
