Reflection on Class Readings
I have learned that much research has been done to establish the effect of different instructional methods on learning. Research shows that there are limitations to these instructional methods and what works for some learners and/or learning situations might not work for others. Further, I have learned that beyond the instructional methods used in teaching, the medium through which information is presented can also affect learners' outcomes. I assumed that today's learners, especially those adept at using digital technologies, would benefit more from digital-based text than paper-based text. However, I have learned that digital-based texts can have a limited effect on learners' comprehension. I have also learned that learner individuality plays a significant part in how learners consume and understand information. What I found fascinating is how a learner's cognitive style can affect how they learn when different instructional methods are used. I am now curious to know how future advances in brain research will influence how teachers deliver instructions. That aside, I have also learned that it is up to educators to figure out what works for their learners after analyzing student individuality, classroom situation, and the instructional goal.
