Principle 3 of the New York State Code of Ethics states, “Educators should commit to their own learning in order to develop their practice.” To this end, the principle requires educators to invest in attaining the professional knowledge required to educate learners (NYSED.Gov, 2017). This principle is essential to my practice and I will take intentional actions to uphold it in my career as an educator.
The principle is highly relevant given the changing context within which education is delivered to learners as well as the skills that should be imparted to learners. Mertala (2020) notes that the education environment is increasingly becoming complex with the increased adoption of technology in education. Traditional curriculum as currently delivered to educators does not fully cover all the emerging technologies with utility in the classroom.
