Part of the efforts to mitigate unnecessary referrals to special education and the unequal representation of structurally marginalized learners in special education includes having culturally responsive teachers at the forefront of the process. However, many teachers find it increasingly challenging to work with a diverse student population, especially when they are unfamiliar with different cultures. Diversity affects how an educator interprets students' behavior and how they interact with their students. Teachers are inclined to misinterpret cultural behavior and actions differently, especially with respect to handling special education students. This essay delineates personal reference frames with respect to culture, language and gender differences, and how such differences impact the ability of the educator to create a culturally responsive environment. It also includes ways to ensure students' diversity is recognized in the learning environment.
Personal frames of reference with respect to gender hold that it is a human variation form that is highly vulnerable to cultural generalization as a primary variable for social relations framing. Gender produces a cultural-difference system relevant to reproduction and sexuality and defines a distinguishing line among students who must cooperate. Cultural frames of reference offer both an individual and a group identity in the classroom environment. Perspectives that a student shares with others offer a group identity, and the specific integration of cultural perspectives offers an impetus for individual identity (Helm et al., 2022). With respect to linguistics, a student may perceive or experience the environment along language-specific lines based on human cognition plasticity discourse (Li & Abarbanell, 2018). For example, some students may prefer a geocentric over an egocentric frame of reference when delineating spatial relationships.
