The incident happened from April 27, 2023, to June 16, 2023, and the media linked it to "abuse" in those states, affecting eighteen people (Red Book, 2023). Each confirmed individual indicated that they had eaten the relevant ground beef before developing the disease, underscoring the difficulties of tracing foodborne pathogens in today's fragmented production chains. The CDC collaborated with the local health departments to collect information from the infected persons and sent traces to ascertain the root cause of contamination (CDC, 2023). It exposed the ever-present Salmonella risk in ground beef and the challenges of tracing food contamination in spread-out food supply chain products.
