Performance-based assessments are considered more appropriate than traditional assessments because of not only their benefits but also of the information they gather about English learners. These assessments provide teachers with “in-depth information about a student’s ability to integrate knowledge for specific objectives or standards” (Pierce, 2002).They not only collect information about whether a student knows the content but also whether the student can apply that content as required (Hibbars, et al., 1996). Traditional assessments only gather information about what a student knows and fails to account for how well they can apply what they know.
One of the benefits of these assessments is that they provide students with feedback on their strengths as well as weaknesses (Pierce, 2002). Thus, students become aware of the areas that need improvement. Two, they provide teachers with the “flexibility in meeting individual needs (Pierce, 2002)”. Teachers can assess each students’ strengths and weaknesses and as a result, they are in a better position to understand what each student needs.
