Canada Now Has a Mental Health Strategy
Mental health has long been recognized as an important aspect of an individual’s health in Canada. The government of Canada has taken serious reforms on the provision of mental health services to its people. This paper develops an understanding of the strategy developed by the Canadian government to overcome mental health issues. In this paper, the pros and cons of mental health strategy are discussed in order to address the wellbeing of individuals living in Canada.
Mental Health Strategy
Advantages
There are certain private institutions and Ngo’s that are working towards the better community health and mental wellbeing of people in Canada (Stergiopoulos, 2014). Despite the government’s efforts to provide mental health support to its citizen, these Ngo’s like Toronto Inner City Health Association (ICHA), is working for the wellbeing of the poor people residing in the city. The mental health services by the government need to be more effective and cheaper. It is the duty of the state to provide its citizens with appropriate and quality care services. Just like the affordable care act in the USA, Canada should also come up with a comprehensive yet effective mental health treatment and strategy to work for the betterment and wellbeing of its society.
Another advantage described by Hoeppner (2010), in his study that the government has decided to acknowledge the services of the non-government organizations. Their contribution to the society in the form of better mental health services, providing training and education to people with lower income. Moreover, community-based are appreciated and researched emphasizes on the need for more community-based programs. Since these programs are tailored based on the needs of poor people. John (2003), stated in a manual of Canadian drug policy. The comprehensive drug policy by the government of Canada fosters the health and safety of the community. Analyzing the present situation of mental health strategy in Canada, John also stated that with the reintegration of people with a mental disorder who are on psychotropic medication is only possible when all relevant stakeholders take part in it. These stakeholders include parole officers, police, correctional workers, social workers, mental health professionals, and community workers. The contribution of researchers in the field of rehabilitation is not deniable. Due to the efforts of research institutes like the Correction Service of Canada (CNS), it becomes possible for policymakers to understand the good correctional practice.  Furthermore, he stated that the Canadian government needs to develop a clear and evidence-based policy to avoid any confusion in the future. Policies made by the government of Canada are impressive and productive. Their policies are considered a spark and hope for the future of humanity. Implementation of these policies is another important aspect that needs to be analyzed by future researchers.
Disadvantages
Research studies have played an important part in pointing out the flaws in the mental health strategy prevailing in the country. For instance, in a research study by Olawo (2018), they highlight the mental health of African immigrant youth. The researcher claims that intersectional factors, as well as gender differences, play an important role in shaping their mental health perspectives and experiences. Another research study by Guirguis-Younger, and Hwang (2014) stated in their study that people who are homeless or a refugee from another country have a high ratio of mental health problems.
It is difficult for black women to live and survive in a white-dominated and supremacist society. In a research study by Cuffy (2018), it is suggested that the resilience and adjustment in the society enable such indi...
