Discuss why it is important for families to be engaged in mathematics with their children and what that might look like
Research by Aubrey, Bottle & Godfrey (2003) demonstrates that the manner in which children engage in mathematical experience is largely determined by the relationships established at home. Parents are in a better position to stimulate the mathematical knowledge of their children. They can do this through didactic or even more participative styles (Aubrey, Bottle & Godfrey, 2003). Engaging children in mathematics while at home creates a learning environment where mathematics becomes an everyday exercise. Embrey and Murray (2011) demonstrate that children learn mathematics better when they have an opportunity to investigate and explore. Where students have such an opportunity, they are likely to maintain ownership of the process which improves their comprehension of math (Embrey and Murray, 2011). While this article focuses mainly on what happens in the classroom, its ideas are applicable at home. It is important for families to create an enabling environment where children can learn math.
Burton & Baum (2009) demonstrate that families that are involved in education have their children demonstrating a higher academic achievement and positive attitude towards school. Families and their children participate in activities are offer a rich opportunity for learning math. When families engage in teaching their children mathematics, it becomes easier for children to learn the subject since it becomes part of their daily lives. According to Burton & Baum (2009), this can include having family math nights and backpacks with mathematics activities. McGarvey (2013) demonstrates the essence of self-observation and self-evaluation in the classroom setting. It includes collecting information about the activities in the classroom and then exploring the practices and beliefs of the students. Parents can use this technique to instill math interest in their children.
