A child may encounter various people and experiences that may bring them hardships; however, as young as they are, they must be taught how to overcome hardships and move forward. Resilience is the ability to overcome adversity, move forward, and restart. Resilience is demonstrated when a child’s development is oriented toward positive outcomes despite carrying a heavy burden (Barlett & Steber, 2019). There are several factors for building resilience, such as family, community, and schools (Garcia-Parra, 2021). However, this paper focuses on what the family and academe can do to help children build resilience. No matter how young they are, children must learn to be resilient to succeed and be prepared for more challenging problems that may arise as they grow.
Children must first learn their values and skills at home; thus, parents play an essential role in helping children develop resilience. There are several ways to develop resilience, but this section will focus on what parents can do to help their children develop resilience. Parents can demonstrate resiliency to their children so that they can imitate it. For example, if the family appears to be confronted with a problem with no solution, the parents may adopt a positive attitude toward the situation. They may demonstrate to their children that even when faced with adversity, they must maintain a positive outlook on life. Thus, children will learn the value of resilience through modeling. When faced with adversities, they will still have a positive outlook, allowing them to resolve whatever issue they face, thus building resilience.
