Introduction
For economists and policy makers in the various sectors of the economy, there is a challenge to be had when considering the population of the seniors. This is a global problem and such not restricted to the developing nations or the developed world. However, it is important to mention that, for the developing nations, the impacts are going to be much more rapid and extreme compared to the developed economies. This is relative to the fact that, for the developed nations, they have well established welfare systems and basically a strong economic background to withstand the shock that is associated with the challenges of a senior population. Their impact is not simply associated to the economic growth of the global economy, rather they also have an impact on the social support systems and health care costs. Given the fact that, they are less productive in the economy, prone to health care complications and dependent on their families, the strain is rather wide spread and affects not just their families but the entire global community. Over the course of history, the global life expectancy has grown. This is considering that in the 18th century, the life expectancy was at an estimated 25 years only (Crampton, 2009). Seniors that clocked on hundred years, in the early 20th century would be celebrated by the British crown. Today it is more of an expectation than an exception and the impacts radiate from the family level to the global level. Countries are offering better health care, education and the nutrition levels are constantly being improved. For most of the economists and policy makers, the big question is on the solutions for the challenges in question. To resolve these challenges, the best approach and one that is sustainable is the use of technology to enhance care, productivity and social support.
Development of the Aging Challenge
For much of the human history, old age was an exception that only a few got to achieve. The early ages were riddled with war, disease and natural calamities that, the human race was yet to figure out. Diseases wiped out entire villages and war would take more than a quarter of the population. This was especially the case for the young, who in most of the cases took part in the war efforts. As for the diseases, there were not largely selective, but they had a rather hefty impact on the old and the youngest in the population.
To put this into perspective, it was not until the mid-18th century that the global life expectancy increased above the 25 years mark (Crampton, 2009). People largely died in most of the cases before their 30th birthday. Growing old was a massive achievement that called for celebration. It is quite interesting to note that, the British Crown used to send special greeting to its citizens that reached one hundred years, in the early 20th century. For example in the year 1917 there were seven men and seventeen women that were sent the greetings by the queen (Crampton, 2009). Over the years that followed the number would grow rapidly and in 1952, the queen sent out 200 telegrams. In 2007, the number was a staggering 8, 439. Old age is no longer an exception it is an expectation. The global life expectancy has grown from the 25 years before the mid-18th century, to 47 in the 1950s and today stands at 67. This is expected to rise to 75 by the year 2050 (Crampton, 2009).
Over the years there have been improvements in the health care science, with medical interventions and medicine to cure some of the diseases that were a menace more than a century ago. At the same time, the nutrition levels have also grown and this accounts for quite a significant factor in the growth of the senior population (Crampton, 2009). People are no longer threatened by the disease epidemics as there have been subtle improvements in the field of medicine. At the same time, with the improved agricultural and breeding technology, there is access to healthy foods and in plenty with exception of a small population in the developing countries. As such, with a combination of nutrition and advances in the field of medicine, the human population has not just thrived it is has prospered and grown in size. In addition, education levels have also grown topping up the luxuries of healthy population. People now live longer, which while considered as a good thing, is also a challenge in itself.
Perspective on the Problem
The growing seniors’ population is largely unproductive compared to the rest of the population and at the same time they are more dependent on the younger generation as well (Serban, 2012). This means that they are further putting pressure on the support systems, local economies and the global economy as well. Given the fact that, the greatest majority suffer from chronic diseases, they are highly reliant on the health care resources (Valencia, 2012). As such, this increases the cost of health care significantly impacting other sectors of the economy. In terms of the labor market dynamics, the seniors in most of the cases do not have the strength and cannot match the level of productivity expected in the economy (Serban, 2012). Most of them are retired at the age of 65 as they are not as effective as the younger generation. With the growing number of seniors compared to the young generation the labor industry suffers a deficit (Serban, 2012). This is a deficit that not only affects the level of productivity but also one to match the gap in manpower resources. At the social level, it is the element of social support (Trentham, Sokoloff, Tsang & Neysmith, 2015). Many of the senior citizens rely on their families of the state to provide for their upkeep. This means they have to be constantly taken care of by their family members or the state in the case of those that do not have supportive or able families. With their increased and specialized needs that range from health care to basic welfare, this places much pressure on the local and national economies. By extension, this is a global challenge that most countries are constantly trying to resolve.
