Getting the Big Idea: Importance of Management Milestone and Note-Taking Process

Essay Instructions:

PLEASE SEE ATTACHED CHAPTER 8 AND THE TEXTBOOK TITLE , AND CHECK THE VIDEO LINKS BELOW

Before you post to this discussion, you must read the chapter 8 in Fountas and Pinnell. You then must view and analyze at least one videotaped mini lesson online. You do not have to view one of the videos I’ve posted, but you must view a mini lesson about reading. If possible, please try to select a video that has not yet been analyzed by a classmate. After you view the video, ask yourself the following questions:

• In what ways does the mini lesson you saw conform to the recommendations in the chapter?

• In what ways does the mini lesson you saw deviate from the recommendations in the chapter?

• Did the teacher in the video do something that was not mentioned in the chapter that you thought was effective?

• Is there something the teacher in the video could or should have done that might have made the mini lesson more effective?

• What did you think worked well in the mini lesson?

• Was there anything that did not work well in the mini lesson?

• If you were to teach a mini lesson on the same or a similar topic, is there something that you would do differently?

• Did the teacher use any techniques or strategies that you would want to emulate?

Your post should summarize your analysis of the video you viewed in one or two paragraphs. When discussing information from the chapter, you must be specific and cite the page number(s) where the information is located. In addition, you are also welcome to cite any relevant texts that were assigned in this course. If you use an additional text, please use the authors’ names (as well as the page numbers) so we’ll know whether you are referring to the Fountas and Pinnell text or the work of another author. When discussing evidence from the video please describe the evidence clearly, so that if others view the same video they will know exactly what part of the video you are discussing. Finally, include the URL for the video you viewed.

NOTE: You have a full week to post your analysis and this week you do not have to respond to the posts until the following week.

The mini-lesson video viewed is ‘The Big Idea,’ in which the speaker focuses on the importance of getting the bigger picture out after reading a text. The speaker in the video states at the beginning that stories are crucial resources in reading since they provide details that create pictures in the mind of the readers (Eszczypka, 2011, 00: 21). In the video, the speaker presents a story about eggs and reiterates the importance of taking notes as one reads through the text. The need to take notes is presented at the beginning of the video. The speaker structures the note-taking activity into two columns, the big idea, and notes. The notes section is characterized by several short notes from the story of eggs. At the end of the video, the speaker concludes by filling in the big idea column using the short notes taken. Therefore, it is clear from the video that the main aim is to show the importance of getting the ‘big idea’ or what the story is all about.
Chapter 8 in Fountas and Pinnel (2001), it is suggested that milestones are pivotal in guiding students to read effectively and efficiently. Management milestone, in particular, is important as the teacher not only tells the students what to do but also provides skills that assist students in internalizing the reading (Fountas & Pinnell, 2001, p.128). Besides, the authors maintain the importance of providing a summary at the end of the reading task. As such, the need to pause and reflect on what has been read as presented in the video conforms to the recommendation to provide a summary in the chapter. Other similarities include recommendations to use short stories, visual materials, and small groups or in...
