One role that parents play in developing self-regulated learners in the home environment is through the provision of emotional and motivational support for the students. Like everyone else, children need pillars around them. These pillars should be present for the good and the bad. Pillars in life help to point out the silver lining whenever things are not going well. Also, they celebrate and show genuine love and appreciation when good things happen. Parents play the role of emotional and motivational pillars for their children. They encourage good behavior, offer shoulders to cry on, and celebrate whenever good things happen. While becoming a self-regulated learner, students want to feel like they are on the right path and doing the right things, and parents can offer that comfort and support.
The family also enhances a student’s belief in the school and in what teachers are doing. According to (Kadhiravan, 2011), the family’s attitude towards school and teachers directly reflects on the students. So, the family’s belief in the goal of students becoming self-regulated learners and in the teachers’ plans will encourage participation from the students.
Importance of Home-Extension in Supporting Student Development and Academic Achievement
Having this home extension greatly helps to support student development and academic achievement. First, students get to understand that learning is not limited to school. Secondly, it ensures the continuity of learning and keeps students engaged in the activities they do at school. In the end, it becomes easier to build on and reinforce ideas learned.
