Grading of students is a role that can be challenging for teachers. It even becomes more complex when dealing with ELLs because often, language is a barrier to fair assessment and grading. At our school, grading is taken seriously not only by the school administrators and teachers but also by the parents. The school provides teachers with a set of guidelines for grading ELLs.
Grading of ELLs involves the use of rubrics, which provide ELLs with a clear picture of what is expected and how each met expectation will be matched with a score. This is particularly essential because as revealed by Gottlieb (2016) “… teachers have expectations of what each student should be able to produce in response to the instructional assessment task.” A rubric is a good approach to ensuring that those expectations are clear to the student.
