#1 Sources of ethical principles
According to Driesch (2018), there are different sources of ethical principles for humanity, including supernatural power or a deity/God, intuition, situations, virtues, politics, and consequences. Supernatural causes of morality are concerned with God or a deity. Ethical principles are derived from a higher power that is God. Any standard of good or bad depends on divine rules. So people's actions are determined by their desire to please God. The second source of morality is intuitions. The ethical principles arise from human instinct. Humans have innate knowledge about morality. This means that they can detect moral truths when they contemplate ethical issues. Third, Driesch (2018) identifies the situation as one of the important sources of ethical principles. Ethical principles often set in from situations. That is, individuals seek the best solution for every unique situation. It isn't based on a set of rigid rules or codes; rather, it depends on the prevailing circumstances. Fourth, ethical principles can be derived from virtues. The ethical code is derived by observing individuals with high moral conduct. The character of virtuous people determines whether an action is right or wrong. Fifth, politics can explain the origin of morality or ethical behaviors. The political elite creates ethical codes meant to control their subjects. The political ideology influences how people within a state will conduct themselves. However, the political class tends not to adhere to these ethical principles. Lastly, the consequences following some give actions yield morality. This source states that the effects of human action help form ethical principles. The best actions are those that produce favorable outcomes. That is “the greatest good for the greatest number of people (Driesch, 2018)." Consequentialism is common amongst non-religious people who don’t necessarily base their ethics on godly principles.
Sunar (2018) discusses some three aspects that influence a personal sense of morality. These aspects include the following factors such as culture, social circle, and gender. As Sunar (2018) explains, cultures play a vital role in the moral development of individuals. The values or beliefs within a culture may cause a person to display a good sense of morality. Also, specific taboo prevents individuals from engaging in immorality. Every culture is unique, so a righteous act in a particular culture may be considered wrong in another. So cultural differences cause some variations in individuals' sense of morality. Social circle is also an important influence on a sense of morality. Family or close friends influence how individuals perceive morals. If their inner social circle displays good behaviors, then an individual is likely to be motivated to show a higher sense of immorality. However, if their peers are engaged in wrong actions, then this might negatively influence a person to participate in their immoral conduct (Sunar, 2018). Lastly, according to Sunar (2018), gender has been seen as an important element influencing the personal sense of morality. Studies show that differences in early socialization by males and females affect their sense of morality. From a young age, boys are likely to breach moral codes than girls. This situation leads to some differences in ethical behavior as they grow. Sunar (2018) states, "there is a tendency for females to have higher scores on some measures of moral reasoning (Sunar, 2018).” This helps explains why more males are likely to be involved in immoral actions than females.
#2 Mrs. Jones ethical dilemma
This ethical issue involves Mrs. Jones choosing between two actions with positive and negative consequences to society. By reporting the matter to the police, she ensures that the moral principle of the right to justice is upheld. However, by not reporting justice will not be served. Despite not being in prison, Mr. Thompson has proved he’s a reformed man. Part of the role of imprisonment is to ensure a reduction of recidivism through a reformation. Mr. Thompson’s actions after escaping from prison is a sign that he has reformed and become a new person in society. He is a person of integrity who is concerned about the welfare of the community. He engages in actions that promote the greater good of society, such as donating his money to charity. He also upholds virtues such as fairness, honesty, honor, and empathy. So, the ethical issue here is which action produces the greatest good and least harm to society. Mr. Thompson has contributed significantly to the common good. He is giving back his profits to the community through helping vulnerable people, improving livelihoods by creating jobs, and upholding the highest ethical standards while dealing with others. He no longer poses any threat. The creation of employment to the locals and giving back to society are signs of positive contributions that are typical to good citizens. Since Thompson has committed no harm since his prison break, Mrs. Jones has no point in reporting him to the police. So, Mrs. Jones should not report him to the police as this will have the greatest harm to the community (Etzioni, 2017). Mr. Thompson should be pardoned for his mistakes since he is now a good man.
