Rationale for Integrating Reading and Writing
Reading and writing should be taught together in preschool classrooms. Research shows that emergent literacy skills, including alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and concepts about print, develop concurrently and support each other. By integrating reading and writing instruction, teachers can capitalize on the reciprocal relationship between these skills and provide a more comprehensive early literacy curriculum. According to Shanahan and Lonigan (2020), writing is one of the components of early literacy that is a potent predictor of future reading levels. The combined approach in teaching reading and writing ensures the learners balance the two courses as the proceedings in the former make more sense to them as much as they apply the proceedings in the latter in an absolute sense (Bingham & Gerde, 2023). Such an accumulation creates a print-rich environment that enables the child to learn language through various modes of experience and appeals to his interest in learning.
Incorporating the Writing Process
