Research Article Summary (10 points)

To become familiar with original research in the field of special education, you will select, read, and summarize a peer-reviewed research article published in a professional education journal. 

To complete this assignment, do the following:

1) Choose a topic (in class on the sign-in sheet).
a. Article Summary #1: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) 
2) Conduct a library-based, electronic search to select your article. 
a. We will provide resources and teach you how to do this. Do not just “Google” the topic. 
b. Be sure that you understand the article sufficiently enough to summarize it in your own words.
3) Article criteria:
a. Located in a professional, peer reviewed education journal
b. Describes an empirical research study
i. This means the article is about actual research based on experimentation or observation (evidence). In other words, some data were collected and analyzed. 
ii. This excludes editorials, perspective pieces, literature reviews, “best practice” analyses or reviews, and reviews of prior research such as a meta-analysis (for quantitative studies) or meta-synthesis (for qualitative studies).

c. Published within the last 10 years
d. Focused on education for school-aged students (pre-K to 12th grade)
i. The research should be focused on instructional methods by practitioners.
ii. Because special educators do more than just teach (i.e., collaborate with families, co-teach with colleagues, write IEPs, run IEP meetings, etc.), the research can examine a non-instructional practice that is part of the role of a special educator.
iii. Avoid research examining perspectives or experiences of individuals with disabilities or their families. You may include such articles in your Annotated Reference Lists.
e. In US schools
4) Write a 2- page summary of the article. The summary should communicate to the reader, in your own words, the essence of the article. The author’s words should be used sparingly, and if they are used, you must note this with quotation marks and American Psychological Association (APA) style references to the source of the information. 
5) Follow these additional guidelines:
a. Write the summaries objectively, describing the study (do not critique nor analyze it and do not add your opinion); 
b. Write the summaries comprehensively, reviewing the entire article, not selective parts of it. 
c. Be accurate in your wording by noting:
i. Not all studies are experiments;
ii. The word “data” is plural (e.g., “The data were analyzed.” vs. “The data was analyzed”);
iii. It is standard to use numerals if a number is over nine but not at the beginning of a sentence (e.g., "In this study, 42 children were randomly selected." Or, “Forty-two children were randomly selected to participate in this study.”);
iv. Prior to using an abbreviation, write out the full name  (e.g., "The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS) was administered . . . .  The VABS is an assessment of adaptive behavior that . . . ." ).
6) Include the reference citation for the article that you summarized at the top of the first page.  Use APA style as described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). 
a. Note:  the citations generated by some electronic databases are not correct.  Use the APA manual as a guide instead. 
7) Submitting the assignment:
a. Upload (a) the article summary as a MS Word document and (b) the article you summarized as a .pdf to the course Blackboard site by 9:30 am the day the assignment is due.
b. The article summary should be titled: Last name_First name (your last name, underscore, your first name without any spaces).
c. The article .pdf should be titled with the last name(s) of the author(s), the year of publication, and the journal name.
8) Assignment may be rewritten if you receive a grade under 8.5 points for up to no more than 8.5 points.

The article by Esbensen and Hoffman (2018) examines how sleeping difficulties affect the executive functioning of school-aged children with down syndrome. The study is significant because it fills in the existing research gap of a topic that is less documented. The available literature has dwelled more on how sleep problems interfere in behavioral regulations than executive functioning in children with down. According to works of literature available, organic and behavioral sleep problems are prevalent among children with down syndrome. The sleep problems manifest in the form of uneven sleep, shorter sleeping time, and lower sleep quality than usual. Children, including babies, are known to have sleep problems that consequently distort their behavioral regulation and executive functioning. Behavioral sleep problems among children result in memory loss, derailed attention, and impulsive reactions.
The study investigates the impact of the sleeping problem; the study chose to examine thirty school-aged children with developmental disabilities. First, these children were wrapped with actigraph watch around their list for one week during the night only. The aim was to assess the participant's neuropsychology behavior, particularly their shifting ability, inhibitory control, and memory functioning (Esbensen & Hoffman, 2018). Teachers and parents were also bequeathed with the tasks of evaluating the same aspects of executive functioning as well.
In the findings, parents’ report indicate sleep challenges are associated with maladaptive behaviors in adolescents who have developmental disabilities and in children with severe autism variety disorder. There are recent reports that have supported the association amid sleep and behavioral problems, especially among kids who have Down syndrome. However, there is small documentation between executive functioning in kids with developmental disabilities and sleep problems, especially Down syndrome.
