Annotated Bibliography
Ivey-Stephenson, Asha Z., et al. (2020) Suicidal Ideation and Behaviors Among High School Students — Youth Risk Behavior Survey, United States, 2019. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report 69.1: 47-55.
The study was conducted around secondary sources from the CDC. The data collected showed that approximately 1 in five youths had seriously considered suicide and 1 in 11 had made an attempt. These statistics showed an underlying issue that ought to be addressed promptly. Some trends that were discovered in the data showed that females were more likely to attempt suicide. Secondly, suicide ideation was disproportionate to people of color and youths identifying as LGBTQ. One notable finding emerged by sex and grade; a substantial increase in making a suicide plan occurred among males as grade increased.
Ziaei, Reza, et al. (2017) Suicidal ideation and its correlates among high school students in Iran: a cross-sectional study. BMC Psychiatry 17.147
The study found out that 4.1% of the students had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months. The authors also noted that suicide ideation among Iranian students was lower than in other countries. The research also showed that Iranian rates were lower because of strong family bonds which help students during hard time. They also noted that religious thinking also helped deter youth from taking their lives. The study also discovered that drug and substance abuse was a related factor that led to increased suicide ideation. Sexual abuse was also a factor that increased suicide ideation. In the study, sexually abused students had 2.63 times higher odds of suicidal ideation.
Katrina A. Rufino & Michelle A. Patriquin (2019) Child and adolescent suicide: contributing risk factors and new evidence-based interventions, Children's Health Care, 48:4, 345-350
The researchers sought to detail and describe the epidemiology of suicide among children and adolescents. They sought to analyze the factors that lead to children and adolescent suicide ideation. They noted that anxiety, sleep problems, sexual abuse, violence are some of the leading factors that lead to emergence of children and adolescents’ suicide ideation. They also evaluated the efficacy of treatment of children and adolescent suicide. They narrowed down to Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) and safety planning. They determined that though these intervention programs are effective, they need to be adapted for children and adolescents to improve their efficacy.
Part II

A major component of the theory is that people learn through observations. Through observation, an individual acquires information from his/her environment and imitates the models. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among children and adolescents. To many teenagers, these problems appear to be the solution to their problems. Suicide and depression among teenagers are preventable and treatable.
Suicide ideation is learned. Suicide is a learned behavior. A community or society with many models gratifying or depicting suicide would likely have higher cases of suicide. The individuals learn from the environment and community and achieve liberation from depression by taking their lives. The social cognitive theory also points out that individuals choose to learn...
