According to Schraeder and Shelton (2011), different types of training are required for primary care physicians (PCPs) to become comprehensivists. As a comprehensivist, the PCP provides health care to chronic patients. Therefore, they give care to patient who are suffering critical conditions, including cancer, chronic pain, heart diseases and others. A comprehensivist PSP has to be trained on how to diagnose common diseases as a preventive measure and avert the possible complications. Moreover, they have to learn about pharmacology principles that are crucial in administering medications to patients despite the intricacy of the disease they are handling.
