The Start-Up of You and Readers’ Response
The article by Thomas Friedman titled The Start-Up of You about the rise of unemployment and what people can do about it uses a strong emotional appeal to pass the message along. After admitting that things are really bad, the author changes his tone by using words such as "something else, something new" to capture the reader’s attention on what needs to be done.
Instead of focusing on employment, the Friedman advises young people to look for innovative ways on how they can make money. To show just how viable this is, Friedman gives the example of highly valued start-ups such as Facebook, Twitter, Groupon, Zynga and LinkedIn and how these companies have a handful number of employees but they are still doing well. To emphasize this point, Friedman states that these companies can fit all their workers together into sitting space at Madison Square "and still leave space for grandma".
As a way of encouraging more young people to start thinking of innovative ways on how they can make money, Friedman advises that even though the big companies are still going to be hiring, they will be doing so at a low scale and this trend is "not going to change" anytime soon. If one is going to find meaningful employment, and keep it, Friedman advises that one has to be able to think well than all the machines and robots.
