The two critical questions I have relate to why sexuality is a perennial topic and how it should be studied. The first concern is analyzed in Michel Foucault’s volume The History of Sexuality where he explores the discursive aspect of sexuality and even disproves the widespread idea that western society has traditionally repressed discussions revolving around sexuality since the Victorian era of the 17th century up to the rise of capitalism in mid-20th century (Foucault, 1990). Although Foucault does not deny that sex has typically been regarded as a taboo subject and treated as a practical and private matter between couples, he is more focused on sexuality as a subject of discussion (Gutting & Oksala, 2003).
