Nowadays, student's appearance has raised too many questions, and hot debates among policy makers in the education sector. Although children prefer to dress the way they want, teachers and various education authorities require their students to be in a standardized uniform. There are various pros and cons associated with school uniforms (Byrnes, 2013). In this essay, I present my views as to why public school students should not be required to wear uniforms.
To start with, if students are not required to wear uniforms, they will look different and express different looks. This will motivate them to tolerate and accept people from different backgrounds and lifestyles. This will help to create unity and togetherness, since a country may be inhabited by people from different cultures and religions. In addition, students will be in a position to embrace diversity and take off the negative attitudes that they may have towards some tribes or religions (Bowen, n.d.).
School uniform acts as a barrier to a child's way of expressing him/herself. Actually, children are more artistic as compared to many adults and clothes play an integral part in self-expression. However, school uniforms deprive students the chance to demonstrate their individuality. According to research, school uniforms make students to use extreme makeup later in life because of the notion that they were deprived to use them at one point in life. Therefore, if students were allowed to dress according to their preferences, they will not have much interest in some dressing styles like Mohawks, short skirts, and piercing (Byrnes, 2013).
Some school uniforms are too expensive for some parents to afford. As a result, it will be a wise idea if students are not restricted to a specific uniform. This will allow their parents to concentrate on other essential necessities required by the student.
