Impact of Cell Phone Use on Connecting and Bonding Among People
Most people spend nearly a third of their waking hours on their mobile phones than bonding physically. The Daily Mail reports that people used an average of 4.8 hours on their mobile phones in 2021 (Chadwick, 2022). People bonding and mobile use are two essential aspects of humanity that influence bonding. People belong to social institutions like families and workplace communities that need physical or virtual bonding to strengthen their relationships. Mobile phones are crucial bonding gadgets because they accelerate and ease communication and access to crucial information (Dat, 2019). There is a need to balance mobile use and physical bonding because both are important. However, mobile phone usage seems to have excited most people leading to an increase in their use and thus affecting how people bond physically. While cell phones interfere with bonding, people should have more self-control and use cell phones appropriately to connect with others because cell phones are valuable gadgets that allow people to stay connected during any circumstance. Cellphones also enable people to communicate via video or phone call.
Cellphones greatly influence the level of connectivity in society. Technology has improved over the years and provides many different ways for people to connect. Initially, connecting was challenging because of crude technology that was bonding and communication unfriendly. People evolved from the initial practice of using messengers to deliver messages to another individual or group to the current mobile technology where one uses a cellphone to deliver the message through short message services (SMS), phone calls, video calls, email, and social media (Aker & Mbiti, 2010). The Pew Research Centre conducted a study in 2019 to determine the global mobile phones' level of connectivity. To achieve this, the study used eleven developing economies because the level of impact in these countries is likely to be at the least in the global statistics factoring in the developed nations. Silver et al. (2020) noted that over 90 % of the people who own mobile phones in the participating countries reported the positive impact of mobile phones in connecting them with people far away from them. This reiterates the importance of mobile phones in connecting people.
Mobile phones ensure that communication is done anywhere and anytime if a network is available. Feedback is instant with the help of cell phones; thus, the most significant benefit behind the advancement in communication through technology is increased connectivity (Brown, 2020; Rosen, 2004). Currently, people connect more using internet technology incorporated into cellphones. One can access social media and other crucial services that need communication, like banking, using the apps installed on smartphones boosting connectivity through social media. The year 2021 recorded the highest number of professional communication for essential services like banking as clients could not go to the banking halls due to the COVID 19 disease (Silver et al., 2020). These communications also happened through social media platforms where clients asked questions to customer care representatives regarding services.
Social media networks, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, allow people to communicate in private, public, or have group discussions on the platforms. People can also have group video calls and conferences to discuss issues virtually on camera and share ideas on their screens with the other participants (Tertadian, 2012). Most sites have an interface for private messages and public information depending on the users' needs. Cell phones played a significant role during the peak of the COVID 19 pandemic, where movements and socialization were restricted. People continued communicating and keeping in touch using mobile phones. People also shared information from various parts of the universe concerning the pandemic situation, educating and informing others in tracking the containment progress and the effectiveness of the containment measures. This shows that mobile phones have contributed to connecting people.
Cell phones have become an integral part of our life, people from all age stages and whatever professions. We use them to connect socially and professionally. They help people work remotely and thus do not have to physically go to their offices or location of work, as witnessed during the peak of the pandemic season (Silver et al., 2020). The COVID 19 pandemic led to a ban on social gatherings and travel, yet companies had to continue working to provide essential goods and services. This made people whose work could be performed online work remotely using their smartphones (DiGiulio, 2017). The corporate world witnessed a hike in online business transactions during the coronavirus pandemic because of the containment measures. Global companies communicate using cell phones to make orders, and inquiries, confirm packaging and deliveries, and other business-related communications. This means that mobile phones are crucial in connecting people with their work and businesses.
Mobile phones are also significant for academic-related work. The world is rapidly shifting to online learning, accelerated by the COVID 19 pandemic and other factors that may prompt a person's physical absence in the learning environment (DiGiulio, 2017). Smartphones have played a critical role in such cases. Students can log in to the learning institution's portal and find the courses they enrolled in. They submit assignments through the canvas or email, thus do not have to meet their professors physically. The professors can also schedule zoom sessi...
