Data Commentary Assignment: Immigrant Population in Canada

Essay Instructions:

Data commentary” is a common type of text across many academic fields. Its frequency is associated with the common practice of analyzing specific data, making objective observations about what stands out in the data, and interpreting these points. Data commentaries are especially common in the Results sections of research reports.

Please read and follow the instructions carefully:
 Writing Task:
“Data commentary” is a useful type of text to practice also because it involves language and visual resources, such as a graph, table, or image. Successful writers are able to manage the meanings that are communicated visually and linguistically in a single text.

Write a commentary on the data presented in visual format. The visuals are provided, so the topic of the data commentary must be directly related to the data you’ve been assigned.
To focus the development of your data commentary, you are expected to do background research on the topic and pursue interesting academic ideas that can come from these visuals.
What you choose to focus on within the general topic determines the content and focus of your data commentary. This includes the kind of findings that are highlighted in the Highlighting Statements stage of the data commentary, and the way you discuss these statements in the final Extension stage.

Plan the writing assignment before you start writing. First, develop an outline with major points and consider the details and logical order that will support each of these points. Use this outline to write a first draft of your assignment. A data commentary includes three stages: (1) an Indicative Summary, (2) Highlighting Statements, and (3) an Extension. You are required to support your ideas with reliable academic sources, using a minimum of three sources.LengthThe data commentary should be 400-600 words (this word count does not include references; keep in mind that a 400-word assignment and a 600-word assignment of the same quality will receive the same grade: a longer assignment is not necessarily better). Choose your ideas and words carefully, using the strategies learned in the LLED 200 course.

Feedback
You will be expected to complete a full draft for an in-class peer feedback session in Week 22. However, you will not be required to submit a draft assignment to your instructor for grading/feedback. You will receive feedback and a grade from your instructor based on the final assignment you submit. Use comments you’ve received on other writing assignments to guide your process of revision and also take advantage of the AEP tutoring appointments.

Late policy
10% will be deducted for assignments submitted late within the first 24 hours.  An additional 10% will be deducted for assignments submitted 24-48 hours late.  No assignments will be accepted after 48 hours and will receive a mark of zero.
