Describe changes in the urban population in the United States over time. In your answer, be sure to include a discussion of the role of industrialization in changing population dynamics (i.e. demographic transition) and in creating migration patterns. Be sure to also extend your discussion into the present day, and include a discussion of suburbanization, sunbelt migration, reurbanization, etc.
In the past two centuries, the United States saw a big growth in its urban population. As the country has progressed and become more successful, the urban population has continued to rise as well.
In the 19th century, the United States saw a big growth in its urban population. As of 1800, the country’s urban population stood at a meagre 300,000 people. However, by the start of the 20th century, the country’s urban population grew to 30 million people. This number represented 40% of the U.S. population at the time (Levy, 2017).
One major force that helped to spearhead the growth of the urban population was industrialization. Before industrialization, U.S.’s labor force mainly dependent on farming with Levy (10) noting that “85 to 90 percent of the U.S. labor force was engaged in farming.” However, this c...
