Military Leadership Attributes portrayed in Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers Name Institution Military Leadership Attributes portrayed in Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers After reading Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers, it can be concluded that the recurrent theme that is portrayed throughout the book is the value of comradeship and strategic planning/action in military leadership. The book's plotline follows the combatants from their days at jump school to the conclusion of World War Two, and the bond of brotherhood and comradeship that they developed over the period. One attribute of military leadership that is constantly revisited is the value of treating fellow combatants as comrades. In the battlefield, rank and personal differences do not matter. All are individuals who have put their lives on the line for their country, and everyone is ready to die for their fellow soldiers. In tracing the experiences of the Easy Company, Ambrose shows how being a leader is not just about shouting orders to junior soldiers. The brutality of the battlefield creates an environment of fear and horror, and the soldiers' constant concern is staying alive. The reality of war makes all the men in the frontline to realize that everyone is his brother's keeper. This sense of vulnerability inevitably strengthens the soldiers' loyalty to each other. Ambrose's Band of Brothers echoes Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, in which the author recounts the experiences of the Alpha Group in the jungles of Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
