1 Introduction
In the constantly-connected digital age, ephemeral content is king. It is no longer about creating content that will be around forever, but it is about creating content that will be around for a little while and then disappears (Johnson & Keane, 2017). This type of content is perfect for capturing people’s attention because it is always new and different. It also makes it easy to keep social media feeds fresh without having to worry about constantly updating the content. There are several ways to create ephemeral content (Moores, 2004). One could use social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram or develop his viral content strategy using sites like BuzzFeed and Vox. Platforms like Tiktok, Instagram Stories, and Snapchat remediate time and space differently. TikTok and Instagram Stories allow users to post content that lasts for a limited time, usually 24 hours. Snapchat, on the other hand, allows users to post content that disappears after a certain amount of time, typically 10 seconds (Evans & Saker, 2017). This difference in how long content lasts affects how users use the platforms. The essay analyses how TikTok, Instagram stories, and Snapchat are ephemeral content to remediate time and space. A critical analysis is conducted to determine the drawbacks and benefits of these approaches.
2 Literature Review
1 Ephemeral Content based on Temporarily Theory
The theory applicable here is temporarily not intended to be retained or stored for future use, typically because it is not essential or relevant. It is often used to temporarily distribute information or promote a product or service (Shang et al., 2016). The goal is to create engaging and exciting content to capture the audience’s attention but not enough time and space. It is also considered a platform that cannot be found again on social media platforms, unlike evergreen content that lasts forever. This content is rich media accessible for a short period to take advantage of the fear of missing out (FOMO) (Evans & Saker, 2017). Hence, the content designs to elicit an immediate response from users. It describes how visual media is based on cultural relevance and the state of existing relationships with time.
The temporality is based on time-space compression conceptualized as temporal, which develops historical stages on spatial and temporal aspects in the social world. The theory is based on two aspects: one is time-related, and the other is space-related (Evans & Saker, 2017). 2 Remediation
Remediation theory can be implemented in the case of ephemeral content to acquire cultural relevance and integration to refashion older established media forms. This type of content is often used to share quick thoughts or ideas, and it is often deleted after a short period. There are several reasons why people might choose to share ephemeral content. For example, it can be a way to avoid thinking too hard about what to say, or it can be a way to share something without committing to it (Scales & Potts, 2014). However, it can be challenging to track down people who have shared the content if the content creator needs to ask them a question about it.
Additionally, ephemeral content can often feel disposable and unimportant. The content remediation can reduce digital footprint and establish standard records in managing the classification of new content and facilitate information in lifecycle management. Hence, the remediation represents one medium to another whose purpose is to acquire cultural significance, remix, reference, and compete with traditional media.
3 Networked Temporarily
Ephemeral content is a type of content that is temporary and disappears after a certain amount of time. For example, Snapchat and Instagram Stories are very similar in functionality. Both platforms allow users to share photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours (Chen & Cheung, 2019). One can add captions and emojis to Stories, making them more engaging for users. Ephemeral content is gaining popularity on social media platforms because it allows users to share unique content that is not archived or stored in a permanent format (Karlsson & Sjovaag, 2016). Hence, it can be said that ephemeral content is also great for marketing purposes because it can generate buzz and excitement around a product or service. These effects are short-term because soon, the contents are overlapped with other contents or events happening around.
4 TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat Remediate Time and Space
TikTok videos are typically used to share quick, everyday moments with friends. Snapchat is more commonly used for laughs and to capture fleeting moments. For example, a person might use TikTok to post a funny video of themselves while at work and share the same video with their friends when they get home. Because content on TikTok lasts for a limited time, users are more likely to frequently revisit and share these posts (Bayer et al., 2016). This constant sharing reinforces that these content items are ‘ephemeral.’
Instagram stories mediate the time and space for 24 hours in the form of pictures, videos, and content. By creating short and easy-to-consume content, companies can create a more engaging experience for their customers. There are many benefits to using ephemeral content. By using it correctly, companies can create a more engaging and memorable experience for their customers (Johnson & Keane, 2017). In addition, ephemeral content can be used to mediate time and space. By creating unique and memorable experiences, Instagram can stand out from the competition. However, stories on platforms on Instagram and Snapchat are beneficial to highlight on the profile. Snapchat was the pioneer in content where the strike vanishes after 24 hours (Villaespesa & Wowkowych, 2020). Almost all social media platforms use marketing to grab customers and engage them with their brands and activities.
Snapchat, on the other hand, is used more for ‘deeper’ sharing. For example, a person might post a long video on Snapchat to show off their new outfit or tell a story. Because the content on Snapchat only lasts for 10 seconds, it is less likely that users will revisit and share it frequently (Bayer et al., 2016).
