Should guns be outlawed?
Indeed, this very controversial and sensitive issue has been sparking debates all over the United States. The National Rifle Association has over the years been trying to promote and encourage responsible gun ownership American residents wishing to possess or own firearm, but that has not been an easy task.
In the middle of this controversy lies the second amendment, which states ‘A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed’. Modern debates concerning the actual meaning of the amendment have ranged between whether it preserves the right of a person to bear and keep arms or that of the state to have militia organizations (Ciyou, 2012). It is a relevant amendment only when it involves protection against crimes, but enforcing it has not been easy. Many have been reported to misuse their weapons, and at times, no necessary actions have been put in place. A few cases have been emerging to support this argument.
Back in July 2012, approximately 12 people died and over 50 were injured during a mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, where a gunman unleashed gunfire in a crowded movie theatre. In the same year, a gunman opened fire just outside of the Empire State Building, and even when the police tried to stop him, the ended up shooting and injuring 9 bystanders. These two are just but a few of several tragic events involving misuse of firearms, and the debate on the ownership of guns has on several occasions come to the spotlight (Carter, 2006).
