Question 1
Risk communication addresses issues that might go wrong in the future. It involves a message about known probabilities that may cause harm to an organization or entity and how it may be solved. The message here considers cultural beliefs and technical understanding. Risk communication contains a primarily persuasive message in public education campaigns and advertising (Priest, 2005). On the other hand, crisis communication deals with issues that have already gone wrong. It contains a message about the current state of events, including immediacy events, magnitude, cause, control, blame, and consequences (Coombs, 2010). The message in crisis communication is mainly informative, including news disseminated through media.
Public relations officers working in the two areas use the differences between crisis and risk communication to customize messages to fit the issue. It also helps them to differentiate the kind of message and channel to use in each case. Those handling risk communication will have to create a persuasive message disseminated in the form of advertisement. Those handling crisis communications should have a primary informative message sent shared through news media.
