Assertive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, manipulative and submissive communication styles are largely used in movies (Jackson & Bosse-Smith, 2008). Evidently, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a fascinating romantic comedy explores cultural diversity in a combination of adorable romantic and humor. Precisely, the fairy-tale features Toula, 30 years old Greek American single woman in love with a non-Greek man, Ian. Her struggle with culture builds heated interaction throughout the movie. Featuring a number of communication styles, my big fat Greek weeding movie emerges successful.
As earlier mentioned, different communication styles are applicable in movies, which is the case with my big fat weeding. Evidently, Toula and her mother portray excellent listening skills. Every time they engage in conversation with other people, they carefully listen and show compassionate. For instance, when Nick talks about college plans, Toulas confides in the idea. Although, Toula was the family black sheep, her submissive communication style helped in developing closer connection with the parent leading to accepting Toula decision of marrying Ian (Gugino, 2014).
Women are known to be more irritating than men are as witnessed in the movie. For instance, “If nagging was an Olympic sport my aunt Viola would have a gold medal” (Gugino, 2014). Whenever Toula plans to work at her aunt, Viola could see to it that her dad knows. This clearly indicates a manipulative communication style depicted by women association as a way of helping each other.
Men appear to be strong but the unspoken bunch in the movie. Ideally, they hardly unveil their emotion, where their few words are final family decision. For instance, as the family head, Toula dad felt irritated by her (Toula) decision to go against culture. During the family talk with Ian...
