Listening is a skill and the more you practice it, the better you become. By understanding your own listening style and your motivations for listening, you also have a chance to overcome barriers that might keep you from using active listening.

Effective listening skills support interpersonal communication, whether you are talking to your friend, customer, partner, or boss. I actively listen to others by paying attention, reflecting to show that I am listening, asking questions, providing feedback, and avoiding interruptions. As an active listener, I have learned the need to practice some techniques, including summarizing, paraphrasing, clarifying, and empathizing. In this vein, my listening style is empathic. I typically listen to understand and support the other person’s feelings, especially when listening to a colleague experiencing challenging times. That said, I have learned to change my listening style based on the situation by considering the context, the purpose, and the target population of the communication.
