Jakobson’s Model of Communication
Course event
The reading for this assignment is:
Jakobson, R. (1981). Linguistic and Poetics. In R. Jakobson (ed.), Selected Writings, Vol. 3. The Hague, Netherlands, Paris France, New York, U.S.A: Mouton Publishers. 18-28
You are hired by the CDC as the head of their social media team. To inform the public, you need to write a Tweet or Two. The message cannot be longer than 5 sentences. Your supervisor has given you the following instructions regarding what the text should contain in the following order (wrong order will lead to losing points):
1. Instruct the public on what to do.
2. Explain one terminology of COVID or its measures
3. Give Information about COVID-19
4. Express your position about Covid-19.
5. Make sure the message is memorable (it either has a memorable sentence or memorable elements throughout)
Before you can post your message on social media, you have to prepare a template for your supervisor. After each sentence, write which of Jakobson's functions is compatible in parenthesis. You will be graded on writing a correct sentence for the compatible function in the correct order asked, in other words, the sentence you write needs to fit the correct function from Jakobson!
You do NOT need to research COVID19 for this assignment, but use the information you already know about it (please try to avoid misinformation, as it may upset us!).

In the Jakobson Communication Model, he discusses six theoretical frameworks for how communication should work; the study focuses on the creative use of language. In this paper, the author will produce an example of a message consistent with Jakobson's theory and then explain each sentence.

The first of the six functions are the (1) Referential Function, which states that in this Function, message conveyance is done utilizing every feasible media, often in the form of a message or statement about a specific object or event. The second of the six functions are (2) Expressive Function, which, as the name implies, is where emotions come to life and are incorporated into the sentence. Emotional exchange can occur between the sender and receiver; the transfer is regarded as an expressive function. Third is the (3) Conative Function, defined by Jakobson as the endeavor to influence or persuade the other person, where the act of influencing and persuading might be of the sender or the receiver as long as both are present. Following the third one is the (4) Phatic Function; language is used to build and sustain social relationships and signify the start or conclusion of a communication transaction. Second to the last is (5) Met...
