The purpose of this review is to investigate the effects of communication styles on marital satisfaction. This review will focus on identifying whether there is compelling evidence, trend, or causation regarding the relationship between communication styles and marital satisfaction.
Issues
A significant starting point for an investigation into the effects of different communication styles in marriage is an examination of the importance of communication in marriage. Then, it is essential to explore the effect of different communication styles on marital satisfaction. Moreover, the review will focus on identifying other factors and variables that influence the relationship between communication styles and marital satisfaction.
Scope
Communication styles have been shown to have an influence on marital satisfaction. Thus, the current review will examine the importance of communication in marriages and examine the effects of various communication styles on marital satisfaction. For this paper, the impact of external factors, such as cultural differences, socio-economic status, and religious beliefs, on marital satisfaction will be ignored.
Importance of Communication in Marriage
Several research studies have found that communication is an essential element that has a significant influence on the quality of marriage. In their study, Litzinger and Gordon (2005) that the quality of communication is one of the key factors that determine the extent to which a couple experiences marital satisfaction. In the same vein, a study conducted by Harris and Kumar (2018) that focused on determining the extent to which communication skills predict marital satisfaction showed that interpersonal communication among married couples predicts the levels of their satisfaction with marital life. That is, the researcher found that the rating of communication quality among couples had a significant influence on the subsequent judgment of marital satisfaction.
In line with this, several studies have been conducted to examine the influence of communication training on the levels of marital satisfaction. Askari et al. (2010) conducted a study to examine whether undergoing training intended to improve the communication skills of a couple could be effectively used to improve marital satisfaction. The researchers found that the levels of marital satisfaction increased significantly among the participants who were given training on how to approach communication in marriage. It is evident that communication can be considered a significant element in determining the levels of marital satisfaction that a married couple reports.
Effect of Communication Styles on Marital Satisfaction
Studies have established that some communication styles in marriage have a positive and significant relationship with reported levels of marital satisfaction. Amiri and his colleagues (2011) conducted a study that was intended to examine the effects of communication style on the level of marital satisfaction. In a survey finding conducted on 100 participants recruited through multi-stage clustering, the researchers found that the adoption of a mutually constructive communication style had a positive and significant influence on marital satisfaction.
The findings align with those from a study conducted by Litzinger and Gordon (2005), which reiterated the important role that communication plays in determining the level of marital satisfaction reported by a married couple. To this end, the researcher conducted a regression analysis of data collected from 387 married couples to examine the extent to which communication and sexual satisfaction predicted marital satisfaction. Constructive communication style was found to play an important role in explaining the level of marital satisfaction in a marriage. A positive effect of mutually constructive communication style on marital satisfaction was also reported by Eftekhari, Hejazi, and Yazdani (2018) in their study findings.
On the other hand, there have been studies that have revealed several communication styles with a negative and significant relationship to marital satisfaction. In a study, Heffner, and her colleagues (2006) conducted a study to examine the influence of demand/withdrawal communication style on marital satisfaction among older spouses. In an examination of 31 older couples with demand/withdrawal communication patterns, the researchers found that the communication style employed during conflict has a significant influence on marital quality. To this end, the application of a demand/withdrawal commun...
