Harnessing the Power of Story Writing Assignment

Essay Instructions:

Your Key Professional StoryAfter watching the video “Harnessing the Power of Story,” http://bit(dot)ly/1IIunQZ reflect on a story that is important to you that shows people who you are and your key skills. Hiring managers will typically interview several candidates for a position and, as discussed in the video, they will be more likely to remember a compelling story rather than a statement about how organized you are. While using an example from a job or internship is always a safe option, do not be afraid to tell a different story if you think it better speaks to your character. Here is an excerpt from a compelling narrative  (note, this is an excerpt. Make sure your story has a beginning, middle and end):
“Growing up, my family had one of those clunky video cameras that recorded everything on VHS tapes. Though I was not always supposed to, sometimes I would sneak into the closet and grab the camera to experiment. My cousins and I would write scripts and make movies, pretend to be stand-up comedians with our television shows, and direct commercials for imaginary products. Although our thrifty reuse of old tapes caused us to permanently erase the footage of my great-aunt’s birthday party, I would say it was all worth it, because it led me on the path to my career in marketing….”
The writer hooks us immediately with something that is relatable and humorous—old technology, childhood creativity, boring home videos—and preps it to be tied into why she chose her career in marketing.

Key Professional Story
My family had always been traditional so on holidays we would visit the house of our relatives, bring our assigned dish for the feast and catch up with each other. On the Christmas eve of last year (Decemeber 24, 2016), it was unlike the one we normally have because I noticed that as people get older every year, the more they want to have fun during Christmas without thinking of their responsibilities even just for a few days. This is the reason why we now have games as part of the celebration and the adults are happy to oblige.
My nephews and niece all watch in awe as they see their parents beat each other for the bag of Cheetos or Snickers if they win. There was particularly one game that really gave me the laughter because the end of a lady’s stocking was cut and 2 boys were to insert their heads into each end and they were to walk in opposite directions towards opposite pillars of the room. The goal is that whoever is able to reach the pillar 1st wins. This turned out to be hilarious because they look like robbers and their faces become unrecognizable as the stocking becomes tighter on their face.
It is indeed a harmless that is guaranteed to make everyone laugh hysterically and the game is best executed by people who are always up for anything. Another fu...
