Describe the five variables that should be addressed in an expatriate performance management system.
Compensation package
Compensation reflects direct and indirect payments to employees, but employers also offer employees non-financial benefits. Salaries are the main form of compensation. These are the perceived financial benefits that affect career progression.
Culture adjustment
Expatriates need to adjust to the local environment to succeed while also exercising multicultural awareness of the host culture, including the business environment. Expatriates should be able to communicate and understand the host nationals, which may require knowledge of the language, customs, norms, attitudes, and business practices.
HQ support
Expatriates are more likely to perform well when there is support from the headquarters. While working overseas, the expatriates may encounter new challenges but are still expected to be highly committed to the organization.
Host environment
The host environment influences performance as a welcoming environment makes it easier for the expatriates to work seamlessly (Oddou & Mendenhall, 2016). On the other hand, meeting the organization's objectives in a hostile working environment is more challenging.
Task
Expatriates are assigned different tasks, and they may need to adjust while also being competent to carry out the assigned tasks. Typically, expatriates are ranking employees, such as the chief executive who oversees a team of diverse workers.
Analyze the elements within each of the five variables that should be considered in the performance management system.
Compensation package
Compensation includes basic pay and benefits. Among the competitive benefits are medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, and sick time.
Culture adjustment
Expatriates need to know more about the host culture, including language, norms, and values. Another element of cultural adjustment is adapting to the local conditions.
HQ support
Professional support to expatriates. Training and development of the personnel are necessary to improve effectiveness.
