What is Good Supervision in Human Services?
The role of a supervisor is integral to the success of every organization in human services. They ensure that staff reaches the expected performance standards. Their tasks range from problem-solving, planning, delegating, and decision making. Supervisors manage individuals and groups within an organizational context to ensure it attains the set goals and objectives. So, a supervisor needs to take up different roles within a human service enterprise.
To me, supervision means three things. First, supervision is a form of management. This is because a supervisor needs to combine planning, organizing, coordinating, and managing functions with a department. A supervisor needs to design an action plan that will enable an organization to attain its goals. They mobilize physical, financial, and human resources that will be necessary for executing business operations. They also coordinate daily activities to guarantee that workers accomplish their assigned tasks. This action includes monitoring, tracking progress, and taking any corrective measures (Leonard & Trusty, 2015). So, for a supervisor to realize positive outcomes, they need to have proper management skills.
Second, supervision means understanding the organization's culture. Without this insight, the work of a supervisor becomes more complicated. A supervisor should be familiar with the organization's mission, vision, and goals. In this way, they can know how best to motivate their staff to achieve these objectives. They should also be aware of the functioning of other departments within the organization (Davys & Beddoe, 2010). This knowledge will help a supervisor to effectively collaborate with other related departments and work together towards a common goal.
Third, supervision involves knowing the behavior of individuals and groups. In my view, a supervisor can be compared to a behavioral scientist. This means they need to analyze and interpret human behavior within the organizational context. This understanding will help them strategically use their subordinates to execute the required tasks to meet organization standards. Further, a supervisor uses this knowledge of human behavior to help staff learn to work together in peace and harmony. Any social service organization can expect conflicts to occur in the workplace. However, a supervisor will establish a conflict resolution mechanism (Davys & Beddoe, 2010). This way, a supervisor can foster teamwork and cooperation among employees and create a conducive working environment.
For supervision to be useful to staff, a supervisor needs to be a good leader. A supervisor with core leadership skills will inspire and motivate their workforce to fulfill their potential. This means that a supervisor identifies the strengths of each worker. Recognizing an individual's skillset will enable the supervisor to leverage their capabilities to del...
