Strategic planning is imperative for the company. It will entail identifying the goals of the organization and formulating a systematic approach to accomplish the identified goals. It will involve addressing a number of questions: (i) where is the organization currently? (ii) What does the organization have to work with? (iii) Where does the organization want to be? (iv) How does it get there? In addressing the first 2 questions, the latest history and altering contexts – both external and internal – of the company would be examined to evaluate the present position of the business. Addressing the second question will involve considering the weaknesses and strengths, as well as determination of how to take advantage of the strengths.
Answering the third question of where the organization wants to be will entail developing the vision. This step will involve everyone that will have a stake in attaining the vision. The vision will communicate what the company believes are the best conditions for its community, that is, how things will look if the issue that is vital to the company were addressed perfectly (Steiner, 2011). By coming up with a vision statement, the governing principles of the organization would be clear to the larger community and employee of the company.
For the organization, the vision will then be translated into a mission statement – an inclusive, wide-ranging statement of the company’s purpose. The mission statement will describe what the company will do, and the reason as to why it is going to do that. The mission statement will be the same as the vision statement except that it will be more concrete and action-oriented than the vision statement (Steiner, 2011).
