Abstract
Hunger is a global problem which remains prevalent up to this day. Approximately 10.7% out of the 7.6 billion people around the world are experiencing chronic undernourishment and majority come from lower-middle-income countries. From these countries, Africa and Asian countries are more affected by this global problem.
The common problems regarding the causes of hunger and malnutrition include poverty, job instability and food shortages and agricultural supply. All of these have are correlated with each other and these all link to having hunger as an endpoint.
The Sustainable Development Goals tend to attain improvement on reduction of hunger by the year 2030. To achieve this goal, solutions regarding must be generated and concretely fulfilled to allow immediate results in the reduction of global hunger as much as possible.
Introduction
Worldwide, hunger is considered one of the major problems faced by many countries. It still remains prevalent despite the significant drop of the number of hungry people over the past two decades. Malnutrition/Undernutriton is the end result of hunger that’s why both can be correlated with each other CITATION Goa20 \l 1033 (United Nations Development Programme, n.d.).
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the estimated number of people suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2016 is about 815 million people (10.7 %) out of the 7.6 billion people in the world. A huge number of these estimated people come from those who live in lower-middle-income countries. Calculation of the Global Hunger Index scores with a time range of 1992, 2000, 2008, 2016, 2017 and 2018 was done and a score of greater than or equal to 50 was obtained which is defined as extremely alarming. Among the countries with the highest scores are the Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia CITATION Ros20 \l 13321 (Roser, 2020).
Undernourishment is highly prevalent in Africa but the highest number of undernourished people are found in Asian countries. To further understand the difference between Africa and Asia we define prevalence as the proportion of a population affected by a disease while a number is the amount or count of people in that population with the diseaseCITATION 20120 \l 1033 (WorldHunger.org, 2018).
To address this worldwide problem, 191 United Nations (UN) member states developed the United Nations Millenium Development Goals which comprises of eight goals. These states have agreed to try to achieve these goals by the year 2015. The very first goal included here is to eradicate poverty and hunger. In 2010, five years before the end of the monitoring period to achieve the stated goals, achievements were already seen. In developing regions such as Asia, the proportion of undernourished people has fallen by almost half since 1990 (23.3 per cent in 1990–1992 to 12.9 per cent in 2014–2016). Despite this achievement, it was found out that the prevalence of undernourishment has been slowly increasing in the year 2016 CITATION The20 \l 1033 (United Nations, 2015).
According to the World Food Programme, now that the world is facing a threat, the COVID-19 pandemic, all the efforts in eradicating hunger may be jeopardized because the number of people suffering from hunger could be doubled which will put an additional 130 million people affected and at risk.
With all of this at hand, to be able to achieve the goal of totally reducing hunger a global problem, concrete solutions are needed to combat this and it will involve not one person but one community to achieve these goals.

Poverty
The ultimate cause of hunger worldwide is the occurrence of extreme poverty, both in developed and developing countries. Because of this, millions of people are living in hunger because of the inability to afford buying of food, eating nutritious foods and obtaining farming supplies needed to grow good food for their own.
As part of the Millenium Development Goals of the United Nations, together with poverty, efforts to reduce poverty resulted in a decline of the number of people living in extreme poverty by more than half. In 1990, the number of people experiencing poverty was 1.9 billion but a significant decrease in 2015 occurred, showing a number of 836 million people.
Criticisms:
According to an article, the World Bank may have been a critical point about the decline of global poverty basing on the measurement of poverty occurring in people who live on less than $1.90 per day. A lot of critics are doubting the statement of the World Bank president Jim Yong Kim, in which he stated that it is “the lowest poverty rate in recorded history”. With this, we can say that there may be flaws on the measurement of poverty which in turn does not reveal the true nature of this problem worldwide. It may be that it is not a real decline after all but a false negative result CITATION NIl18 \l 1033 (NIlsen, 2018).
Job Instability
Hunger, poverty and job instability are deeply correlated with each other. Job instability would mean that a person lacks the ability to produce sufficient income to support his own leading to poverty and eventually hunger.
First, in order to say that a person has a “decent job” that could support his daily living would be if he has a sufficient wage. If a person could not meet these expectations, then most likely the family he/she is supporting will suffer from poverty and hunger. Problems on having this decent job may be because of several reasons like losing a job, struggling of maintaining a job due to poor job performance and low paying jobs. Another problem would be, a person might not be able to obtain a decent job and is stuck in a low paying job because of lack of educational attainment to pursue a career CITATION Liu16 \l 1033 (Liubrandi, 2016).
An issue regarding job instability would be the occurrence of a wage discrimination. A person may have a stable job and a good educational background/attainment but the 378369533700minimum wage given may not be equal and reasonable to the work he/she is doing. In simpler terms, they are being underpaid for the services or work that they are doing. It is a sad reality especially for women which is also the reason why most of people in poverty are women.
