Personal Statement on Ethical Business Behavior Vision
Typically, the core purpose of a profit-oriented organization is to generate profits. The profits are essential because they keep an organization healthy, keep investors happy, allow for growth and expansion of the business, and allow employees to enjoy a variety of benefits from basic salaries. However, in the pursuit of profits, business people may encounter situations in which decisions should involve ethical decision-making. General examples include the wellbeing of employees, environmental considerations, addressing conflicts, and issues like conflict of interests. A core way of understanding, anticipating, and resolving ethical business behavior starts with identifying personal values and beliefs that may play a role in how a business person approaches, addresses, and resolves ethical situations or dilemmas (Grigoropoulos, 2019). These values and beliefs form the basis for a personal vision ethical statement to guide future business interactions.
Personal Core Values
Personal values form the bedrock of ethics because they guide what an individual considers terrible or good. An ethical dilemma emerges when a situation causes a conflict between personal values and the realities in the real business world. Personal values are essential because they help in the prioritization of life demands (Mashlah, 2015). Additionally, they serve as a moral compass on which behavior and decision-making processes are based. The problem with personal values is that some people cannot verbalize them yet use them in day-to-day interaction. The inability to verbalize does not suggest the absence of personal values; instead, it shows that personal values are ingrained in worldviews and beliefs and may become invisible. However, the establishment of ethical literacy depends on the verbalization of these 'invisible' values.
Several online tools can be used in the identification of these values. The Barret Values Center orders values into three categories: self-interest, transformation, and the common good. Common good involves the values that recognize the perspectives and interests of others. Empathy and equity are core values towards this end. Personal interest refers to actions that an individual pursues (and how they pursue them) as a form of self-satisfaction. Just the same way a business is interested in profits, an individual (employee, manager, or leader) can have personal interests. Core values that serve self-interests include responsibility and dependability. Lastly, the transformation category stipulates the values that establish authenticity and independence and shape what a person is now and what they want to be in the future; as part of personal transformation. In this category, the core values include honesty and integrity. Therefore, based on the three categories, I consider essential values honesty, integrity, empathy, equality, responsibility, and dependability.
I consider the six personal values as the key because of their potential to create a friendly business environment in terms of business interactions and how they have played a key role in my life so far. In terms of honesty, for instance, it plays a crucial role in establishing trust and maintaining relationships both in business and social life.
