Organizational behavior is an academic field that deals with how leadership is practiced, how individuals in different diversities relate and work together in a given organization. Organization is a pattern in which large numbers of people engage and relate to each other."(Jain, 2005, p.3,)
The first chapter deals with People Centered Managers and workplaces and has six main objectives. In this context, the six objectives cover Pfeiffer`s people centered practices and the definition of the key term, management. The second objective is the McGregor`s theory x and y assumptions about employees. Deming`s 85-15 rule is the other objective that is followed by the human and social capital. The last two objectives in this chapter are: the impact of positive psychology and e-business.
The second chapter tackles organizational culture with the following objectives in mind: layers and functions of organizational culture, types of organizational cultures, and processes by which organizations change their culture, phases of Feldman`s model of organizational socialization, various tactics used to socialize employees, types of development networks derived from a development network mode of mentoring.
Chapter three handles developing global managers with six learning objectives. Some of the objectives are: identification of organizational behavior trouble spot, globe projects, polychromic and monochromic cultures, individualistic and collective cultures, nine cultural dimensions and ethnocentrism.
Chapter 1: People Centered Managers and Workplaces
This chapter focuses on the role of managers and their effect on the employees. It also touches on managing a diversity of people. The key terms used are management and positive psychology.
The first article, written by Susan, M, Heathfield tackles work place bullying and its main aim is to show how organizational behavior comes in through solving of such work place conflicts. Organizational behavior through proper work place management sorts to improve organizational culture through positive relations.
The illustration of the above article outlines key terms as follows: total quality management, theory y and management.
Management is a process that defines the role played by a leader in a given organization. Its aim is to give directions so as to achieve the objectives of an organization. "Management is the element that coordinates current organizational activities and plans future ones." (Jain, 2005, p.4) Management is in form of decision making, planning, staffing, controlling and communicating. Through total quality management principles for instance build teamwork, trust and mutual, eliminates the idea of theory x and gives room to theory y. Theory y which asserts that employees are self-driven, clearly indicates that for them to reach a targeted goal in the organization, there has to be positive psychology of organizational behavior. Such, employees` productivity or output is controlled through motivational factors such as rewards. Most times the use of coercive force fails due to negative pressure on the employees. However, motivational factors act as a positive psychological aspect since it molds an individual or a group.
On the other hand, lack of motivation or reward may affect negatively. For instance, a poorly paid employee may control the input of work in the organization.
