Introduction
After joining SK Telecom, Ms. Myers saw it as only her golden chance to work in a Korean Company, and proof her leadership ability by initiating goals that would make the company more global. However, everything took unexpected turn when she found herself not able to navigate her new work-environment. She was not given an official orientation, and her superiors did not give her a detailed guidance on how the organization operated. Moreover, her biggest challenge in the new opportunity was that her employer had a different view on what she thought her roles would be (Green, 2011). This paper intends to analyze Ms. Myers challenges while working at SK Telecom in South Korea using Hofstede's five dimensions of culture.
The first of the five dimensions of culture is social-orientation. This dimension involves a person's perceptions on the roles he/she should play. One extreme is of this dimension is individualism. Individualism is usually exhibited by western societies while the rest of the world adopts a free-market-based system. Anyone who embraces individualism tends to think of himself or herself first before anyone else. The other extreme of social-orientation is collectivism. Societies that adopt collectivism prefer group consensus instead of individual effort (Mueller, 2008). Considering the case at hand, Korean society embraces collectivism, unlike American society, which adopts individualism. When Ms. Myers joined SK Telecom, her primary objective was to make the organization more global. Her thoughts were centered on how she would execute her roles not how she would work with the rest of the staff to realize the organization's goals. Because of her individualistic view of issues, she found herself not concurring with her employer on what her roles would be. This posed a big challenge to her, and she found it hard to maneuver in her new work-environment.
The next dimensions is power-orientation. This dimension involves the perceptions that people have with regard to power/authority. This dimension involves two extremes, which include power-respect and power-tolerant cultures. Individuals in power-respect cultures accept power according to a person's ranking, and do not question the authority. On the other hand, individuals in the power-tolerant cultures frequently question the authority. From Ms. Myers case, it is clear that Koreans embraces Power-respect, while the Americans adopt a power-tolerant culture. Although the spokesperson of SK claimed that the company was among the first Korean companies to abolish hierarchic-management paving way for an open and vibrant administrative style, Ms. Myers could see four levels of management that included VP, director, manager, and work bee. She claims that employees only talked to people at their level. This clearly depicts a Power-respect culture. Moreover, M.s Myers being used to power-tolerant culture, she requests her workmates to call her “Linda” instead of “Sang Mu Linda”. To her surprise, she plummeted in their eyes. Although she thought her administrative style was geared at involving everyone in the decision-making process, it was viewed as weak by her workmates. All these differences were encountered because of the power-respect culture of Koreans (Green, 2011).
