Johari's Window is a useful tool and model of illustration and improvement of self-awareness and foster mutual understanding among individuals within a group or society at large (Berens, 2006). The model was developed in 1955 by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham; hence its name was coiled from their names. The two key areas that constitute the model include building trust with others through disclosure of information about a person and with the assistance of feedback from other parties. In that case, one can learn a lot about himself and come to terms or openly accept his personal issues. Johari's Window can be utilized to assess or improve relationships among groups of people whether at the work place or any other social place. In that case, it is viewed as an important tool of management that seeks to improve relations between individuals or parties.
The Johari's Window can be expressed diagrammatically by a window with four quadrants. The first one known as the Open Area, representing information an individual knows about other people and is known by others. The second quadrant is known as the Blind Area. This section represents information known by others but is not known by the individual. The third quadrant is known as the Hidden Area and is the section representing information that an individual knows about them, but others do not know. Finally, the fourth quadrant known as the Unknown Area represents information about an individual that is not known by both the individual and others (Berens, 2006).
