The political, competitive, technological, legal, and cultural divergence between different countries even among the European countries creates an enormous challenge in employing a homogenous management leadership across the continent. Expectations of leaders differ within each country of the European Union especially due to cultural variations. In some cultures of certain countries, exhibition of shyness from leaders is portrayed as rude while in others aggression is a disposition in the workplace. Studies have shown that managers from variant countries within the European Union behave professionally differently and which would have effectiveness implications if a uniform management style were to be applied in the European countries (Deresky, 1999). Differences in resilience to stress, emotional intelligence, outside orientation and designing and aligning in management occur across the nations are attributed to cultural nuances.
For an undifferentiated leadership style to be employed across the European Union, the leaders must demonstrate multiculturalism in that they can adapt and fit a conglomerate of cultural environments. According to GELI a study on middle and top-level executive leaders across the European Union, showed that Eastern European countries style of management especially for the Nordic nations, are particularly ranked high in ‘global mindset’ attribute which fosters unity in diverse cultural settings. Eastern European leaders are renowned for advancing tenacity and empowerment in employees. To make a homogenous leadership style effective, leadership teams and boards should be diverse enough to accommodate all the cultures of the various European countries (Jackson, 2002). Conflicting political ideologies are also a hindrance towards forming a uniform leadership style across the European Union.
