Introduction
Since 1957, the European Union has admitted new countries to the union. The recent addition to the union was Croatia in 2013. This expansion has resulted to various implications on both the old and new members. The trading market has enlarged further and the workforce in the European Union has become more specialized and diverse. Due to great prosperity within the union, the individual countries have experienced positive economies of scale. However, EU expansion has also resulted in various risks. This essay seeks to discuss the implications of the European Union expansion.
The advantages of EU expansion
One of the main advantages of European Union expansion is the further enlargement of the already large market. As more countries join the union, more barriers are eliminated resulting to free movement of good, capital and people between countries. Therefore, export potential of countries within the union increase. More so, the expansion enables countries within the union to source some of their services and goods at a relatively cheap price leading to overall improvement of trade terms, (Heijdra et al 2014).
As the size of the European Union market enlarges, both the old and new members of the union increase their wealth, creating new demand for services and goods. This opportunity is exploited through supply and purchase of large amounts of goods and services to and from the market. Therefore, member countries enjoy benefits of economies of scale. Furthermore, expansion of EU enhances the efficiency of the European economy because resources are diverted to countries with the greatest comparative advantage.
