Sustaining change over an extended period can be challenging and requires great effort and commitment. However, generating short-term wins help maintain focus on long-term change. Without short terms wins especially in an organizational setting; it is easy for stakeholders to think that the change effort is futile and will not bear any fruits (Kotter, 1996). Short term wins can be implemented in 6 to 18 months. Generating short term wins helps maintain momentum and eliminates discouragement within the organization brought about by the slow pace of significant change. Importance of identifying and acknowledging short-term wins includes;
* They help prove that it is worth it. Short-term gains provide a chance for stakeholders to see that sacrifices and changes are worth by proving that success is possible.
* They help fine tune vision and strategies. They give guidance on the vision of the organization and test strategies against reality early before it is late.
* Build momentum. Short term wins help convert neutral employees into supporters thus providing the necessary resource required to push for a major change (Kotter, 1996).
* Reward efforts. They offer a chance for rewards after a lot of hard work from employees hence motivating them to press on.
