Introduction
Effective distribution and transportation systems are critical components of homeland security. The disruptions in the movement of goods, services, and resources can cause severe damage to the economy of any country. It can affect everyday operations by interrupting the supply of food, medical supplies, industrial raw materials, and consumer goods. The consequences can lead to slower manufacturing processes, job losses, futile industries, and a crippled economy. It is essential for the smooth functioning of the economy to ensure that the distribution and transportation systems are effective, safe, and consistent. Several adversaries are looking for an opportunity to exploit the distribution network to harm the national economy of any country or make financial or political gains (Tonn et al., 2019). They may include regional or global rival states, terrorist associations, cyber attackers, criminal groups, rogue actors, or foreign intelligence agencies. They can intervene in the transportation system to cause internal disorder and mayhem. Therefore, the distribution and transportation system is considered one of the most crucial elements of national security.
Countries across the globe are making extensive efforts to ensure the security of their distribution and transportation systems for the protection and growth of their nation. One of the most effective decisions is using advanced technology to improve the safety of the entire system. The United States mainly focuses on integrating innovative technology within the system, facilitating interagency collaboration between organizations, and reinforcing regulatory frameworks for the smooth operations of everyday transportation services (DHS, 2024). It is essential for the functioning and progress of the economy and to ensure a presence in the global market.
The US government has made various recent efforts to safeguard transportation and distribution facilities nationwide. For instance, there are amendments in the regulations to integrate the distribution network all over the country. The subsequent paper analyzes the significance of effective distribution and transportation for the United States and the impending threat of adversaries that can exploit vulnerabilities in these systems to disrupt economic stability and public safety (DHS, 2024). The paper focuses on the several ways the United States can improve its distribution and transportation network through the integration of advanced technology, interagency collaboration, and reinforcement of regulatory frameworks to mitigate risks in supply chain logistics and transportation infrastructure to ensure a more resilient national security posture, potentially saving lives and protecting the economy. Figure 1 below shows the intermodal transportation and distribution network within the United States.

Distribution and transportation systems have a vital role in the economy of any country. The United States has a strong distribution network all across the country and a significant impact on the global transportation system. The country transports extensive supplies daily through air, sea, railways, and roads, exposing it to various threats. They may face interruptions due to natural disasters, supply chain disruptions, physical sabotage, foreign interference, terrorism, or cyberattacks (Shawe & McAndrew, 2023). It also plays a crucial part in the state of crises. Whether it be the distribution of medical supplies, military movement, personnel aid, or pandemic situation, the distribution network must be safe, prepared, resilient, and equipped to respond to all types of emergencies. It directly influences national security, economic stability, food supply, supply chain, emergency response, and global and local trade.
The United States can mitigate risks in supply chain logistics and transportation infrastructure to ensure a more resilient national security posture, potentially saving lives and protecting the economy through several methods. One of the most effective ways is by improving enhanced technology integration. This includes artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, and blockchain technology (Feiler, 2024). It can enhance the distribution network's security, efficiency, and competence. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Predictive Analytics are the most advanced technological tools used by modern organizations and governments for the security and safety of their operations, to improve the efficiency of processes, and to identify potential threats and loopholes in the system. It can be done through an extensive amount of data.
The data and AI tools help predict and forecast impending interruptions in predictive analytics, considering various circumstances such as environmental variations, cybersecurity threats, geopolitical issues, or operational problems. For instance, United Parcel Services is an American logistics company operating globally. It developed an On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION) system, which uses AI algorithms to enhance its delivery route optimization using real-time data from AI. The initiative reduced fuel consumption, delivery time, and operational efficiency (UPS, 2020). AI can provide security companies with data analytics to help them monitor and identify potential threats in transportation networks. They can make early interventions through informed decisions to avoid any interference.
The Internet of Things has transformed the transportation and distribution networking system. It offers real-time tracking and monitoring of shipments and vehicles through GPS trackers and RFID tags (Taj et al., 2023). IoT also allows vehicle performance to be monitored and any anomalies identified. The technology connects all the processes and devices through the internet, and the sensors installed inform about traffic management, environmental monitoring, and remote surveillance. Moreover, inventory management, smart warehousing of the products, shipment tracking, and supply chain optimization also positively impact the transportation system.
The United States can mitigate risks in supply chain logistics and transportation infrastructure to ensure a more resilient national security approach through cybersecurity. Adopting an approach that focuses on physical and digital security measures is essential. The authorities must implement advanced cybersecurity proto...
