Effect of Co-evolutionary gaming on Group decision making
Introduction
Effective and efficient Strategic management techniques are vital for any business with an aim of attaining success in today's world. Being a step ahead of competition in business equals attaining a leadership position for a firm in a specific industry, these requires the launching of offensive strategies and implementation of defensive mechanisms.
This paper's focus is derived from ‘Co-evolutionary War gaming,' which refers to an exceptional process of strategic planning used by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) to guide its operations. This model was however proposed for business practice application by Cares and Miskel (2007) as a tool for Strategic Management decision-making. This remarkable piece of study work indicates that strategic planning as done in the military world should not be based on current and predominant facts in addition to historical data regarding trends in business. The model depicts a keen view of decision making and planning from the realization that competition does not play a defensive, receptive or dormant role, rather, competition takes on a firm is positioning strategies like a duck to water. The article proposes that decision making ought not to be conducted in a ‘vacuum' (scenario of basing on past and current market circumstances), since the process will be characterized by lack of foresight and innovation thereby and still risk making the firm a victim of counter plans of the external environment. In fact, making decisions based on past and current information could easily result in outcomes that are worse than the predominant status quo.
The use of the technique of Co-evolutionary gaming facilitates foreseeing complex horizons within a firms reach; task-specific strategies are made flexible to enable accommodation of varied unexpected responses from an organization's environment with an anticipated approach. In other words, the organization stays prepared to deal with any forthcoming challenges even before they surface. As a result, this strategy blocks oppositions to the realization of a firm's objectives.
This paper recognizes that Co-evolutionary gaming technique goes a long way in enhancing group decision making. The process takes advantage of the varied backgrounds and diversity of group members to overcome challenges involved in decision-making. The technique readily acknowledges the existence of a wide range of possible scenarios and the importance of knowledge application as important aspects in effective decision-making. In addition, the fact that the process per se is a mechanism used to reach multiple decisions at the same time as with multiple outcomes, takes the edge off problems associated with group dynamics. As such, the co-evolutionary gaming technique coincidentally brings to the open weaknesses associated with group thinking and operation; this in turn provides the group with more capacity for rational decision-making than would be the case in normal individual making.
Organizations gain a wide range of relevant information for purposes of decision making by employing the technique of Co-evolutionary gaming, invol...
